"A Washington state voter explained that she voted for Donald Trump because she had given up hope after Barack Obama had failed to end racism and poverty.
Carol Fraley, a 66-year-old white woman whose husband is a disabled veteran, wrote a letter to the editor of her hometown Federal Way Mirror to complain about an article she had read about a 10-year-old boy who reportedly came home from school afraid that Trump would reintroduce slavery.
My hope is that this child did not learn such nonsense in school, and that his parents are not as racist as their sons statement makes them out to be, Fraley wrote.
She also complained about another anti-Trump protester quoted in the article who feared her family would be deported for breaking immigration laws."

Obama was elected on a platform of hope, hope to end racism, hope to end poverty, hope to help the declining middle class, hope to lower health-care costs, hope to end partisanship, Fraley wrote. After eight years, I gave up on hope and voted for Trump.

Gee, I just don't understand why Hillary wasn't able to reach people like that?

(28,833 posts)Someone posted an article by a guy on "our" side this morning who said the Democratic Party died in 2009 because Dems didn't "fully fix mass unemployment" and completely fix the housing crisis between 2009 and 2010.

(2,789 posts)This is exactly what I said over in a thread yesterday. After consistently voting in people who screw them over. They expected Obama to come in fix everything then leave after giving them a rousing speech about the meaning of life. Followed by returning the house keys and disappearing back into the ether. Leaving them, and their votes, in a Republican wonderland where the rest of us horrible libruls' don't exist.

(5,648 posts)I'll bet in this big country we could find at least one individual who would say he voted for Trump because he believes that The Donald can best defend us against the alien invasion which an angel told him is coming soon.

(10,154 posts)the other day and a woman is explaining her Trump vote to another woman.
Trumpster - Hillary just had too much baggage. She lived in the White House before. Her husband would have come with her, you know.
Other Woman - Well, I don't know about you, but I had more money when her husband was President.
Trumpster - Well, the economy was better then, it's true. He was President at a good time and then Obama came along and ruined the economy.
I hear similar things all the time, and this isn't even Trump territory. I'm not sure what the antidote to this is. I thought about this for a long time, and the only thing I can come up with is that Dems need to do a better job of getting the word out about what they are actually doing. Or trying to do but being held up by Congress. "Obama ruined the economy" is straight out of Fox, so there needs to be a counterpoint. Something along the lines of "Obama tried to get A LOT more people eligible for overtime with no help from Repubs."
