2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is really beginning to resemble Watergate.
I remember the early Washington Post rumblings which were loudly discredited by Nixon mouthpiece Ron Ziegler and other republicans. Finally, after more and more damning crap trickled out there were enough pressured republican senators to agree to hearings which were TELEVISED. The whole country watched. We all knew Nixon ordered the break in and it was just a matter of time before the truth came out (thank you Mr. Magnetic Tape).
However, I don't have the same hopefulness about today's dilemma. The Trump Machine is very ruthless and powerful. I guess the question now is does the public care enough about the Good ol' USA to turn against the beloved Con Man? And do our GOP representatives (including the "college electors" care enough about the future of our country to do the right thing and demand action? Or is loyalty to the coming dictator more important?.

(25,920 posts)I'm talking about Woodward and Bernstein and newspapers that dug down for the truth. We also had 'Deep Throat' a person that - in my opinion - was a true patriot - that risked his career and life to take down Nixon. We also had Party (Repug) notables that put the country before partisanship and went to the WH and put pressure on Nixon (one of their own) to resign.
Look at what we have today. Need I say more?

If it's sensational, they'll run it. I'm seeing push back in shows where they just gave Trump a pass.
They'll tear him down as soon as something concrete emerges.

(34,661 posts)DNC office is proved, holy crap kiddies. Remember, one of the Spook Agencies alluded to that during the Summer. The office was swept twice, only finding evidence that a recording device had been present some 8-10 feet from Donna Brazzile's Office door. There were fake Volunteers who infiltrated this office. With all of the hustle and bustle around these Offices, phonies try to join in. This might be the soaking gun.

(8,004 posts)because the Republican majority in congress will now circle the wagons. Further, the fate of the country and in fact the world hangs in the balance. That wasn't as much the case back in the '70's.
That didn't really happen that way during watergate. They tried and failed.

(56,840 posts)However, I generally agree - I looked it up the other day. Democrats held the Senate by a 58-42 margin and had somewhere a little north of 250 seats in the House.
To charge Nixon, the Democrats only needed a simple majority in the House and would have needed to swing only 9 out of 42 Republican votes to convict.

(28,760 posts)At no time did the Watergate hearings and revelations make me fear for the very existence of the United States. Watergate never made me consider the possibility of mass, armed uprisings against a dangerous regime. I think that's exactly where we're headed.
Fast Walker 52
(7,723 posts)but you're right, I don't think there was the imminent threat of an overtly fascist regime with Nixon. I think the big thing to watch for will be whether Trump tries to use troops to deport immigrants. If there is any sign of that, we are screwed beyond belief.

(28,760 posts)For all his vast faults, he knew how the game was played, and when his own party turned against him, he bowed out. Contrast that with what we're facing, now.
I talked to an old friend of mine recently. He was distraught because he's gay and he's rightfully fearful of reprisals against the LGBT community by Trump and his goon followers. I ended up offering him and his partner sanctuary and protection, should things end up as bad as that. In my worst nightmares, I never imagined having to take such an action in this country. God help us all.

(3,251 posts)Please don't try to sugarcoat Nixon. He was the worst president we ever had in this country. What he did sabotaging the Paris Peace Talks and then stretching out the Vietnam War for four more goddamned years just so he could be elected and re-elected president is truly beyond the pale.
Trump isn't in the White House yet.
