(62,325 posts)on Dems to get anywhere. And while I can see that some Dems, who tend to be supportive of conservatives, see the NJ Gov race eg, most Dems will not vote to put Repubs in the WH.
However, it's very unlikely that Kasich will win the Repub primary.
More of a tough opponent would be Bush because if they don't win fairly after pouring billions into the race, they are likely to steal it.
Garrett78
(10,721 posts)While Kasich may not inspire the base as much as some other Republicans, Kasich would definitely get their support. And he's from the crucial state of Ohio. A Kasich-Rubio ticket (with Florida being the other crucial state) could win in spite of the electoral college map favoring Dems. If Clinton is the Democratic Party nominee, you can bet the Republican base will be inspired regardless of who their nominee is. If people think the leftist critique of Clinton is harsh, just wait until the Republican Party starts focusing its attention on her. She's extremely polarizing and has a very high "unfavorable" percentage. The hate is irrational (suggesting that she's a liberal extremist, which is absurd), but since when do Republican voters care about rationality?
Do I think Kasich will be the nominee? I wouldn't bet on it, but it wouldn't shock me either. I'd say he's the 3rd most likely behind Walker and Bush. I'd almost bet money that Rubio will be the VP nominee regardless, though a Bush-Rubio ticket might be "too Florida" for the Republican Party to consider. Then again, Florida is the single most important state.

(5,214 posts)"Democrats lead 14 out of 15 of the general election match ups we tested in the state. The strongest Republican is John Kasich, who leads Hillary Clinton 43/41. While the rest of the Republican hopefuls trail with independents, Kasich ties her with them at 38%. And Kasich is also winning over 14% of the Democratic vote to Clinton's 10% of Democrats."
http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/john-kasich/
I don't buy the 'Kasich would win OH' line.
He was a big cog in the 2008 meltdown, his over the top religious and anti union views and more will show the country, much less OH that he is NOT a leader but an opportunist.

In June 2013, Kasich signed into law a state budget which included anti-abortion measures such as mandating any woman seeking an abortion to have a trans-abdominal ultrasound, and barring abortion providers from entering into emergency transfer agreements with public hospitals.[64] The bill stripped some $1.4 million in federal dollars from Planned Parenthood by placing the organization last on the priority list for family-planning funds.[64][65] The bill also provided funding to crisis pregnancy centers, which do not provide abortion referrals.[65] Under the budget, rape crisis centers could lose public funding if they counseled sexual assault victims about abortion.
....
Kasich said that the Environmental Protection Agency should not regulate carbon emissions and that instead states and private companies should be in charge of regulating coal-fired power plant emissions.
....
Kasich is the supporter of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline project.
....
During Kasich's tenure as governor, he pushed to expand charter schools, increase the number of school vouchers that use public money to pay for tuition at private schools, implement a "merit pay" scheme for teachers, and evaluate teachers by student standardized test scores in math and reading.
....
Kasich favors allowing public school districts "to teach alternatives to evolutionsuch as intelligent designif local school officials want to.
....
In February 2014, Kasich signed into law a bill which cut six days from Ohio's early voting period, including the "golden week" (a period at the beginning of early voting when voters could both register to vote and cast an in-person absentee ballot).
Just to highlight a few of his stands. More at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kasich

Latinos are the fastest growing demographic in the US voting population.
At this point they may generally feel the GOP is not particularly favorable to their interests, but every second Trump is in front of a camera, the GOP becomes the party of "We Hate You" in Spanish.
That's one reason why Trump drives whatever intelligentsia is left in that party, like George Will, positively fuckin' bonkers.
That's the "plan" I was referring to--- mine, here:

(45,251 posts)away from Republicans for a long time, or are you saying that his being President would cause Americans to turn away from Republicans for a long time? I realize that either of those things would do it, but I don't think Americans will elect him. America ould survive him, I imagine, as it survived Dimson, but the damage will be great and there is only so much damage from the likes of Dimson and Trump that the country can sustain long term.
As an aside, fifteen or not, I have to give Deez Nuts credit for not choosing Trump, as so many of his elders apparently have.

(11,175 posts)He's caught in the Catch-22 of contemporary American politics: You can't gain the support to do well in the polls unless voters and the media take you seriously as a candidate, and you aren't taken seriously as a candidate unless you do well in the polls.
Lincoln Chafee is an honorable man who was clearly right to change parties. From his Wikipedia bio:
If his father, John Chafee, had ever been President, instead of just a Governor and Senator, then Lincoln would now have the name recognition to be a leading contender.
Having a former Republican on the ticket would help us make the case to even lifelong Republicans that their party had left them, in its mad lurch to the right. As a side benefit, we could give Falafel Boy (Bill O'Reilly) a fit, because when Chafee was Governor he referred to the decorated fir tree at the State House as a holiday tree rather than a Christmas tree.

It stands to reason that some percentage of Hillary supporters (10%?) are in her camp not because they prefer her, but because they think she is more electable than Bernie.

It's the same reason in reverse why a Progressive won't vote for a Libertarian.
There is 30-40% agreement between the two groups. The 60-70% disagreement is on substantial issues.

Also a poll would be a 'data set', not a 'data point.' But that is just quibbling over words on my part.
Ultimately what your post seems to be about is casting aspersions on people that you disagree with.

(14,689 posts)Chafee finally was able to garner a vote. I think this happens in public polling also. Some candidates (Gilmore, Pataki, Webb) are so unknown that they can't even get a single vote in a 600 person poll.
I can see this poll being interpreted in different ways. HRC supports will say that DU is full of far-left loons and not representative of the public at large. Sanders supporters can say that this shows his dominance on a board that represents the grassroots of the Democratic Party.
I'd be interested to see who would be voters' second choice. I went Sanders, but I'd probably have to go O'Malley at #2.
