PROTESTING WORKS!

Via Occupy News

"Recent history has shown that protesting can have a significant impact. In fact, what other single method has been as effective as protesting? Dictators in Tunisia and Egypt would not have been overthrown if it weren't for protesting. And there's no questioning the impact of the Occupy movement.

Protesting (which includes marches, rallies, pickets, strikes, non-violent direct action, sit-ins, etc.) doesn't always work, and it's not the end all solution to every problem. Sometimes protesting is part of the solution, and other times, protesting leads to incremental improvements. Sometimes it's just to bring about awareness and to build momentum. Protesting is also a way to let off steam, and to be around like minded people.

The establishment has perpetuated the myth that protesting doesn't work because they want to deter people from doing it. People in power must love it when activists take the bait and say that protesting doesn't work.

Here are some recent examples where protesting has worked":

In Quebec It’s Official: Mass Movement Leads to Victory for Students
Naomi Klein: ‘This is why radical movements are mercilessly mocked. They can win.’
After a year of revolt which became known as the “Maple Spring”—including massive street protests that received global attention—university students across Quebec were celebrating victory on Thursday night following the announcement from newly elected Premier Pauline Marois that the government was cancelling the proposed tuition hike that led to the student uprising and nullifying the contentious Bill 78 law which was introduced to curb the powerful protests.

“It’s a total victory!” said Martine Desjardins, president of the Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec, which is the largest student association with about 125,000 students. “It’s a new era of collaboration instead of confrontation.”

“Together we’ve written a chapter in the history of Quebec,” she added. “It’s a triumph of justice and equity.”

Well-known Canadian author and activist Naomi Klein, responded to the news by tweeting :

is absolutely right, when tens of thousands of people take to the streets, they become a threat to the corrupt institutions who respond by trying to shut them up.

I am looking forward to a massive, Global demonstration combining all the recent movements, the Indignados, OWS, the people of Greece, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Unions everywhere, all of whom are protesting the same draconian policies that have destroyed so many countries.

Now they have shown their hand, more and more people are awake and for them, this is not a good thing, but for the people, it's way past time.

Word on my Twitter feed has it that Irish Facebook are deleting posts and Irish Twitter are deleting accounts focused upon it. They're scared.

Good.

I am glad it is going Global. So much has been wrong and unbalanced as a result of Imperialism and Predatory Capitalism. The powerful forces who created most of these problems have been Global for a long time, while the people were isolated in their own countries. That has changed and they should be scared. And hopefully eventually brought to justice.

6. 1st international

Resistance and revolution against neoliberalism has been global all the time, from Zapatista uprising to spread of Social Forums, General Assemblies etc.

This rejection of the traditional methods of the left is not simply confined to Mexico. In 1996 the Zapatistas organised an international encounter in Chiapas attended by some 3,000 activists from over 40 countries (including the author). The Encounter ended with the 2nd declaration of Reality (the final venue being the community of La Realidad) which asked, what next, what is it that we were seeking do to do?

"A new number in the useless enumeration of the numerous international orders?

A new scheme that calms and alleviates the anguish of a lack of recipes?

A global program for world revolution?"

This rhetorical rejection of the methods the left had used to organise internationaly, particularly in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th international, was followed by a suggested alternative:

"That we will make a collective network of all our particular struggles and resistance’s. An intercontinental network of resistance against neoliberalism, an intercontinental network of resistance for humanity.

This intercontinental network of resistance, recognising differences and acknowledging similarities, will search to find itself with other resistance’s around the world. This intercontinental network of resistance will be the medium in which distinct resistance’s may support one another. This intercontinental network of resistance is not an organising structure; it doesn’t have a central head or decision maker; it has no central command or hierarchies. We are the network, all of us who resist."[21]

We could say that 1st International never ended, or that we have returned to a new beginning of it, after learning from the mistakes of 2nd. etc.
