The Occupy movement in Los Angeles looks much different a year later. While the movement fractured, a smaller, but loyal group continues to fight big banks and is seeing some success in standing up for troubled homeowners.

October 29:
(Note that at least six instances of fraud have been discovered in the banks paperwork and made public, yet the bank continues to call LAPD and various aspects of the city works against Fort Hernandez so they can evict the family. The sheriffs are usually the ones at the beck and call of the banks, but Band of America are using the police. In this instance, at least a dozen riot cops and some department of works to demolish the barricade which is clearly on the Hernandez property. The tweets said LAPD warned neighbors to not leave their homes [to support the Hernandez family, obviously]. Riot cops and nuisance intrusions. Who do they protect? Who do they serve?)

On Sept. 2 the Perez family came to Occupy Fights Foreclosures meeting asking for help. The family was facing eviction on that day and we decided to help the family. After of hours examining their documents and their case we understood that the family was victim of foreclosure fraud by multiple individuals including the banks. We immediately mobilized and occupied their home. The story brought National attention and after several calls to US Bank executives the eviction was called off by the bank. We engaged in direct talks with the bank and they decided to offer the family a loan mod. Richard Valdez a supporter of Occupy LA's Occupy Fights Foreclosures assisted the family in preparinng their loan mod application. Today I got a call back from the bank informing us that their loan mod was finilized and ready to be signed. We are in the process of verifying the offer to make sure that the Perez family has a reasonable offer. The Occupy movement is very happy for the Perez family and is committed in helping those suffering by the injustice of the financial institutions.
If you are a victim of foreclosure you need to fight back. Don't let the banks steal your home. Your hard work and sacrifices should be protected. FIGHT BACK, JOIN US IN THE FIGHT! ~Carlos

Today is October 29, for Fort Hernandez it is day 65 since we decided to ignore the unjust eviction issued by Bank of America. This morning at approximately 9:30am the LAPD deployed 80-100 officers, completely blocking off Leadwell St. as well as Vista del Monte and Cedros St. They entered the area they had blocked off and ordered all of our neighbors not to come out of their homes. A few residents who were outside of the perimeter when it had been established were not allowed access to their own property. Media was also barred from entering. A supporter later informed us that they had told her that they were running a tactical drill. After the LAPD established this perimeter; 25 employees from Street Services began to tear down the barricade. A bulldozer was brought in to take the remnants of the barricade and put them into a dumpster as a helicopter flew overhead. One of our supporters, Amber Barrero was arrested during this process on an old warrant.
Earlier this month Javier and Ulises had been issued citations for the barricade and the couches set in front of it. However the court date to discuss these citations has not yet come. Furthermore the citation that was issued to Ulises was given when he was not even present and lacks a signature of an officer.
First and foremost todays events are an obvious show of intimidation; the terrorist tactics used by the LAPD are a clear attempt to deter our neighbors from supporting us. Tearing down the barricade before the court ruled on when or if it had to be taken down is an obvious lack of accountability to the judicial process they are suppose to be a part of. It is also a violation of our first amendment rights. The barricade was always an artistic display of resistance and tossing it away also meant a loss of protest materials and the destruction of artwork that had been donated by children from our family and the community at large.
In a show of solidarity we ask any and all supporters to call the Van Nuys Police Station and demand the release of our supporter as well as answers to the excessive and irresponsible use of resources to terrorize our family and community.

Fort Hernandez barricade torn down by city

The barrier was part of an Occupy protest against the foreclosure of the home, also known as Fort Hernandez, which has been ongoing for over two months.
LAPD officers assisted in the action by setting up a perimeter by blocking the streets and baring access, said Occupiers in a statement posted on the Fort Hernandez Facebook page. Street Services used a front-end loader to tear the barricade down and remove debris.
According to the Contra Costa Times, the city considered the barricade a danger to the community.

(38,893 posts)Los Angeles police were called to a Van Nuys home Monday that has been the site of an ongoing anti-foreclosure demonstration headed by Occupy protesters.
Officers accompanied inspectors to a home in the 14600 block of Leadwell Street, a watch commander at the Van Nuys police station said.
Dubbed "Fort Hernandez," Occupy activists have camped out at the home to support the family living there, who have been fighting foreclosure for years. The demonstrators have been there for 65 days and built a wall around the house, said protester Kylene Wolfstein.
