Published on Jan 27, 2013
Protesters peacefully sat in at the UCMC's new "Center for Care and Discovery" requesting a meeting to discuss the lack of adult trauma ca re access for South Siders in the face of a $700 million dollar hospital expansion which is not primarily directed towards neighborhood health needs. (135,848 posts)Staffed with specialists, Level 1 trauma centers provide emergency care around the clock to people pulled from the wreckage of automobile accidents, as well as the victims of shootings, stabbings and other traumatic injuries.
Trauma centers are a significant drain on hospitals finances. The U. of C. Medical Center closed its trauma center for adults in 1988, but it still provides trauma care for children at Comer Childrens Hospital.
At the time, the city was home to several hospitals capable of handling patients with the most serious injuries, including Michael Reese Hospital on the South Side. But Michael Reese shut its doors completely, and other hospitals subsequently decided to leave the network, creating a paucity of trauma centers for adults in some parts of the city.
U. of C. Medical Center officials have said establishing trauma center would come at the expense of other vital hospital programs.

(38,893 posts)Emmanuel Rahm used to work for Goldman Sachs. This summer, he closed multiple Chicago health and mental health clinics despite some nurses' offers to work for free to keep them open. Occupiers were removed. The Chicago teacher's union had to strike to get better conditions. The No NATO protesters were met with riot cops 15 deep and IIRC some are still in custody, being made an example of.

Keep the cameras rolling. It's our only hope.
