Anyone catch Sarah Sherman's set on SNL's Weekend Update?
And why am I posting about it in this particular sub forum? The reason will become clear in a moment.
So, Sherman did a bit on Weekend Update that included some gross out humor regarding women's underwear. It honestly went beyond my comfort zone and I LOVE Sarah Sherman's humor. There is a twisted edge to her wackiness and I am usually there for it.
But her October 19, 2024 performance pushed the envelope for me. Yet, I'm not posting to vent, because I can accept the fact that just because something doesn't sit well with me, it doesn't mean that particular thing is wrong in and of itself.
However, when I re-watched the bit on Youtube, I decided that allowing Sarah to push the boundaries of the audience was a very calculated move, and not merely in the cause of humor.
Before Sarah Sherman came out, the Weekend Update segment featured a set by one of the new cast members, who is of Middle Eastern descent. [And now you are nodding in understanding vis-a-vis my forum posting choice,]
Emil Wakim did a relatively tame set about his heritage, but he did reference the current situation in Gaza. When he did so, it undoubtedly made some people uncomfortable, no matter how reasonable he sounded. (Because, let's face it, some people simply cannot be reasonable about the Middle East and that's why I'm being so cautious in choosing a sub-forum for my post.)
I believe that the producers of this past episode of SNL wanted to redirect the potential discomfort of the audience. Sherman's bit was a decoy to get people talking about something borderline gross so that they could air something morally complex.
Some of you may be of the opinion that I am overthinking this, but overthinking is how I get a hold on my overactive amygdala. And when it comes to the suffering of my fellow human beings, my amygdala is a mess.
