Related: About this forumRape, Rape Culture and the Problem of Patriarchy
This is a small part of a well written article, but I thought these were salient points. Funny-- I usually don't read truth out.
Men who do not rape but would be willing to rape if they were sure they would not be punished.
Men who do not rape but will not intervene when another man rapes.
Men who do not rape but buy sex with women who have been, or likely will be, raped in the context of being prostituted.
Men who do not rape but will watch films of women in situations that depict rape or rape-like acts.
Men who do not rape but find the idea of rape sexually arousing.
Men who do not rape but whose sexual arousal depends on feeling dominant and having power over a woman.
Men who do not rape but routinely masturbate to pornography in which women are presented as objectified bodies whose primary, or only, function is to provide sexual pleasure for men.
Those men are not rapists. But is that fact that the men in these categories are not, in legal terms, guilty of rape comforting? Are we advancing the cause of ending men's violence against women by focusing only on the acts legally defined as rape?

(110,159 posts)humiliation. degradation. submission... dammit woman, you submit. i am the fuckin man, and you... just a woman.
that is what was said to me yesterday.
a man that readily admits to daily use of porn
needs me... some woman he has no clue about... to submit, get on all four, choke on his cum, be raped.
a poster. on du. that many men, in their group has defended, stands with, cheered on.... in his constant jabbing toward women and our issues, for a time. a long while.
i am having a lot of thought with the feel good the administration must feel, for standing up for me, kicking that filth off du. but, until it made it to that final place... sticking a cock in a woman mouth, .... they did and do nothing. allowing the festering.
on the other hand, when we say .... freedom of sexuality. everything must be accepted, ok, allowed. there is no conversation when two consenting adults. doesnt effect who we are. what we are. how we see each other. no conversation, exploration, consideration.
there are going to be men that read what i post, and chuckle, giggle like little boys, say damn right, woman.
rape is our entertainment today. we find all kinds of ways to validate that entertainment. but. rape. is our norm. as a culture. as a society. we normalize. rape.
i am really having some huge issues with the whole concept of a man, men, more than one you know (juror that did not have the guts to get in my face) having their constant, always need to rape, degrade, humiliate women. and to have it on du, where i spend my time....
has a lot of thoughts going in all kinds of directions.
a culture. a society. where watching this on a regular basis is just fun entertainment. implementing it to real women. meh.... so easy. feel good.
what is this

That racist misogynist post is exactly what we talk about. The guy lost it and went right to the source of easy to find hate to express his views.
He didn't have to think
He didn't have to look
He didn't have to do anything but be a disgusting hate filled man, who gets off on degrading women. And he's supported by society.
BTW I requested to have that picture removed. If assholes want free porn there's plenty of it to go around.

(17,874 posts)Might there be another issue involved here, that our culture exalts violence to the point of a religion? So long as "strength" is defined as the ability to impose one's will on another, people will fantasise about this "strength," and some will cross the line to actually trying to be "strong."
I wonder, however, how much indulging fantasy by watching some violent "entertainment" serves to sublimate it, and how much such indulgence tends to evoke emulation? It would be nice to have some data about this, but it would have to be a long-term experiment and not a quickie.

(42,533 posts)When you start digging into it, that you are correct, we are dealing with vicarious violence on an almost constant basis.
They've done studies on video games, but not on adult entertainment-- well there are many studies on porn, usually of the "quckie" (heh) variety-- polling college students for instance. The violence as entertainment would indeed be interesting done over a period of ten or twenty years.
