(113,131 posts)I hate that phrase. "Grow up" did the same job without the sexism but with all the annoyance on both sides.

(15,480 posts)I've used that phrase in the past, but never will again. Upon reflection, what I meant to say and needed to say was to urge someone to "human" up, or to "take courage".

(22,057 posts)to imply that perseverance, strength and competence are uniquely male characteristics.
Do Gabby Giffords, Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai need to "man up"? How about Bella Abzug, Christa McAuliff and Eleanor Roosevelt-did they need to be male to be meaningful? The phrase is outdated, more suited to the 1950's than to today.
Its hot right now though, just like immediately after 9/11 "Let's roll!" was hot. Saying "Grow up" is the same thing without submerging in a swamp of sexism.
