The study, conducted at a large unnamed private university in upstate New York and published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that 19% of women, nearly one in five, said they had been a victim of attempted or completed rape, either by force or while they were incapacitated due to alcohol or drugs, during their freshman year.
"What this says to me is a lot of our young women are dealing with this sexual violence and we all probably know young women" who have been victims, said lead author Kate Carey, professor of behavioral and social sciences at Brown University's School of Public Health.
The study, conducted by researchers at Brown and Miriam Hospital's Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, involved surveys with 483 first-year women who ranged in age from 18 to 21.
They were recruited to take part in a survey about women's health and answered questions on a range of issues including alcohol consumption, suicidal ideations and sexual behavior. They recorded their responses before they started their first year, and at the end

(1,615 posts)I remember this age. nothing but sexual harrassment, constantly. and when I needed help, there was none to be found, the subtext being that I was a feminazi bitch with an axe to grind.

(1,265 posts)...was that if you weren't a predator, you were a sexless wimp. Sadly, a lot of men and women seemed to buy into this idea.

(1,265 posts)I was able to find lots of like-minded folk to hang with. It's just that when I was young and naive, I thought that predators would be pariahs, shunned by everyone. I was shocked to find that that wasn't so. Still am, really.

(26,618 posts)I entered college in mid '60s...it was the same then. It kills my soul that it is still considered the girl's/woman's fault for putting herself into a position to be harassed/abused/raped. When will responsibility be required of the male side of this equation?

(3,747 posts)Yet unsurprising. If you want proof that colleges do not care about rape, look no farther than the fraternity/sorority system. It insulates and reinforces traditional gender roles and bigotry. It provides reasons and situations for men to be shown that rape is acceptable. It is the highest mainstream expression of rape culture and white/male/hetero/elite privilege in our culture. Very little has been done to change this.

(42,486 posts)One of the reasons I post about MRAs is because a number of young men with indoctrinated sexism/misogyny are finding them on the internet and think they've been validated. They don't need help from those goofs, they need gender education
