How to "promote" GOP primary candidates to maximize the Democratic chances in the general

One of the problems that I can't really don't see an easy way to resolve is how we can effect the GOP primary so that it helps the Democratic Party. Part of this problem, I believe, is the way we promoted Donald Trump in the primary by giving him all the free media time ($2 billion by some estimates) in the primary through CNN and NBC in particular, mainly because we thought that he would be easy to beat in the general election (and actually was beaten in the popular vote).

So my question is this: what should our role be to affect the GOP primary to maximize our chances in the general election, particularly if we get bonafide anti-capitalist progressives on the ballot as the Democratic Party nominee? By the way, this goes for all congressional offices, not just the president, and can drill down to the state-level candiates as well.

Finally, and it goes without saying: This is not a thread to actually promote the candidacy of the GOP candidate on an issue by issue basis, as generally all GOP policies are anti-progressive and need to be completely discredited and destroyed. Rather, this is to ensure that either the worst possible candidate is selected to be easily beaten by our progressive candidate, or in cases where Democrats have very little chance at winning, to ensure the least destructive candidate gets the GOP primary ticket.

Food for thought.
