Related: About this forumAny else get a big white box on their screen when starting a new OP?
When starting a discussion, I have a large white box with a drop shadow covering about half of my screen real estate. It runs off the bottom of the screen. I have to zoom out (Ctrl -) in order to see what I'm typing. So now I'm typing in a ridiculously small box with a ridiculously small font to the left of the big white one.
At the top of the box is show the navigation: Latest Discussion >> Help Forums>> Community Help >> Start a new discussion
This is showing up while starting a new discussion in every forum EXCEPT Latest Breaking News.
Preview is working like normal.
I'm using Firefox with no popup blocker BTW.

(391 posts)I had to do a lot of charging pages and relaunching to make it go away.

(102,389 posts)see https://www.democraticunderground.com/1319486 - still happens to me, on both.
And, like you, it's OK on LBN - the different format of the Start Thread screen gets it right.
Thanks for the tip about zooming out - at 90%, I get the full box I'm typing into, though it's very narrow, in terms of number of characters across it has. I get more characters the more I zoom out, but the font becomes harder and harder to read.

(50,712 posts)I'm using Windows 10.
Just check my phone (android) and it does the same thing but worse. I can't even see the text box.

(30,139 posts)No white box for me.
This is like moving in to a new house and looking for the light switches. Happy navigating everyone!

(22,514 posts)I'm still working on it though.
By the way I don't think your email came through... I didn't receive one from you. It might not be necessary now though -- don't re-send yet, I'll let you know.

(22,514 posts)There's a glitch in the code which is causing the problem, we'll have it updated as soon as we can -- it might be in the morning though. But I just wanted to let everyone who is having this problem know that it will be resolved.

(22,514 posts)Can you confirm that it's now working correctly?

(102,389 posts)and you may also be glad to know that (or something else you've done) has also fixed a problem I saw with the banner ads at the top of screen - these were being served as two, one centred, and then one on top of that, and to the right, obscuring the other, but partly off the right hand side of the screen (and its offset to the right was about the same as the large white box causing the Start Thread problems of this thread). I'm sure the advertisers will be happy to know the ads are now central and readable.

(22,514 posts)I noticed that too-large banner yesterday as well. Since we changed the layout of the site, there may be a period of weird stuff happening with the ad placements as the ad software adjusts to put the right sizes in the right places, so its possible you will see some sporadic issues with ads overlapping. Were aware that this is going on and were monitoring it, hopefully it will not take too long to shake out.

(102,389 posts)It's a slightly different page, since it shows the original version as well as the boxes for editing.
EarlG
(22,514 posts)Thats the same issue as the other one, just on a different page. Well be able to fix it today.
Perhaps you could check and let me know if you have the same issue when sending or previewing a mail message. It may also happen there.

(50,712 posts)Now it pops up only when previewing an OP.
I tried preview on an existing post and everything worked as normal.
EarlG
(22,514 posts)Let's just clarify all the situations where this is occurring (or not). I'm hearing:
Starting a new OP: Working
Previewing a new OP: Not working
Starting a new reply: Working
Previewing a new reply: Working
Editing an existing OP: Not working
Previewing an edit of an existing OP: Not working (or, don't know yet, if you can't get past the edit page)
Is that correct?
We know what the issue is now so we will definitely get these pages fixed, although unforeseen circumstances mean it might have to wait until tomorrow I'm afraid. Sorry for the delay.

(50,712 posts)I think your assessment is correct.
Have a good weekend! You probably need a little rest!
EarlG
(22,514 posts)I had literally forgotten what day it is... I'm afraid that the fix might take a little bit longer then, since it's Saturday tomorrow.
But... thank you for reminding me that it's the weekend!

(22,514 posts)How is this looking now? Are you still seeing issues on those pages, or do things appear to have cleared up?
To clarify, the problem pages we just looked at were:
Previewing a new OP
Editing an existing OP
Previewing an edit of an existing OP
Hopefully those should be working now.

(50,712 posts)Previewing a new OP works fine now.
Editing an existing OP also works fine now
Previewing an edit of an existing OP also works fine now

(238 posts)You might need to reboot your computer, clear the browser history and see if it improves. How much memory do you have in your computer (RAM)? If you have too many programs open or multiple versions of Firefox running at the same time, it will likely impact your computer's performance. You could check the performance by looking at Task Manager in Windows while you are having the problem (it will give you some indication of whether your disk drive is slow, your CPU is overloaded, or whether certain programs are using an inordinate amount of memory). Your computer can also perform poorly during a major download for Windows (which tend to be huge files).
