In the 21st century, this is an anachronistic throwback to when rhe U.S. was agrarian.

My own opinion is that the world should all be on UTC so it’s the same time everywhere on Earth. We would have to adjust to going to work at 1400 (2:00 pm) but the Sun’s height above the horizon would be the same as it would have been at 9:00 am in the present system. If we ever become a space colonizing society this would be the way to keep everyone in one time zone. Note: It’ll never happen!
