Statement From John Feinblatt, President of Everytown For Gun Safety
The shooting in Dallas last night was one of the largest mass shootings of law enforcement in U.S. history. While protecting the rights of peaceful protestors, five officers were assassinated in the line of duty, while seven others were injured. This shooting was a cruel and violent attack on law enforcement, who fell victim to our nations culture of violence and unfettered access to guns.
In just the last few days, weve seen how gun violence takes many forms on our nations cities and streets, including in Louisiana and Minnesota but the common factor is that there are far too many families and communities suffering today because their loved ones lives were senselessly taken. We mourn with them.
What we do know is that they are all a part of the terrible portrait of gun violence in America. Each of the lives that were cut short in these horrific events this week is part of the daily toll of gun violence that kills 91 Americans and injures hundreds more.
As the countrys largest gun violence prevention organization, we are focused on ending gun violence. We must change the laws and the culture that has led to our country having a gun murder rate that is 25 times that of other developed nations. We invite Americans to join us in demanding that political leaders take action to reduce gun violence in all of its forms, in all of our communities.

Support and elect Democrats who are not on the right-wing gun lobby payroll, and who will enact sane gun control legislation at all levels of government. We owe it to our children and the future of our country.

(30,058 posts)1. A completely sane statement, it is past time for action.

(42,649 posts)2. Recommended. First, make all campaigns public lyfunded with no
private or corporate contributions allowed. And prohibit campaigning prior to 180 days before an election. End the never ending campaigns.
Second, go back to the original intent by only allowing organized militia members, ie. the state National Guards, to keep and bear arms.
Problem mostly solved.
