Why are gun sales falling?
The government doesnt keep an exact count of firearms sold, but the system can be used as a proxy for sales and is considered an indicator for the industry. According to data kept by the agency, 2,030,530 firearm background checks were logged this January, down from 2,043,184 in the same month last year and 2,545,802 in 2016, which was a record year.

Gun companies have seen slowing sales and dwindling stock prices over the last year. Despite a successful Black Friday, during which just over 203,000 background checks were processed, holiday sales were sluggish.

In a report about American Outdoor Brands released Monday by Wedbush Securities Inc., a securities firm and investment bank, analysts cited firearms-purchasing trends among risks to their price target and rating: Gun ownership is becoming increasingly concentrated, with fewer gun owners owning more guns, as guns are primarily marketed to people who already own guns.

There are still too many guns circulating, but at least sales of lethal weapons continue to fall as fewer Americans feel the need to be armed and dangerous. This is a welcome trend.

(6,510 posts)Gun sales tend to rise when Democrats are in office, because the NRA pounds the public with (Insert Democrat) is going to ban guns!! Rhetoric to scare them into buying more.

(6,641 posts)I see the same gun-nut rhetoric about "Democrats taking our guns" here on DU.

Interestingly, the Gungeoneers have been quiet since trump took office.

(2,263 posts)and I have a client who sells weapons - mostly they are cowboy and civil war reproduction stuff.
I spoke with her recently and she told me that Obama was the greatest thing for their business - guns sold like crazy. Then, in comes 45 and sales have plummeted.
Just pointing this out as her experience seems to confirm the article you have posted.

(6,641 posts)President Obama never confiscated, banned, or even proposed restricting guns in any way, shape, or fashion. Right-wing gun nuts demonizing Democrats is a tried and true NRA marketing tactic in order to sell more lethal weapons to the gullible.

(2,263 posts)In the days following 9/11, I ran around and armed myself with the same irrational thoughts that GWB (silly me) was going to start confiscating guns. It's all about emotion.

(6,641 posts)marketing ploy that says, "while supplies last," or "limited stock on hand." Confiscating guns would a near-impossible task logistically, and unconstitutional to boot, but the prospect instills irrational fear in the gullible.
The NRA, ALEC, and GOA use fear very effectively to flood our streets and homes with lethal weapons for their gun manufacturers and dealers, all in the name of blood-money profits.
