Canadian government stiffens firearm laws as gun-related killings spike
and U.S. smugglers get creative.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised in December to introduce stricter laws that would 'get handguns and assault weapons off our streets'
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised new regulations and a string of measures to counter gun smuggling, which is regarded in the United States as a dangerous problem underscoring much looser firearm laws.

Yet compared with the United States, the incidence of gun violence in Canada is almost minute. The latest figures, from 2014, show only 156 gun-related homicides in Canada compared with 10,945 in its more populous southern neighbor.

Handguns in Canada are mostly forbidden with an exception for certain types used for target shooting. So are machine guns, silencers and large magazines. Semiautomatics are heavily restricted.

American gun nuts like to say that Canada has no real "restrictive" gun laws, but the facts are that they have enacted several sensible and reasonable (and very effective) gun control measures. The incidents of gun violence, as compared to the USA, are extremely low for their population, and continue to fall.
Contrary to the gun humpers' claims, gun control not only works, but when implemented uniformly nationwide works extremely well. Canada, Great Britain, Australia and other Western nations are prime examples of what can be achieved if the right-wing influence and profit motives are ignored.
It is past time that the USA follow the lead of progressive nations around the world, and enact measures to save American lives from needless gun violence. Contrary to what the NRA, ALEC, and GOA (and resident gun promoters) would like you to believe, none of these measures violate the meaning and intent of the Second Amendment.
