CA Gov says gender 'missing in the national conversation' about shootings

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday called for gender to be part of the conversation about mass shootings given that shooters are most often men."

"These shootings overwhelmingly - almost exclusively - are males, boys, men. I do think that is missing in the national conversation," Newsom said at an emergency meeting on the state's response to mass shootings, according to Politico."

"If there was anything more obvious, I don't know what is," he added at the meeting with school, health and safety officials. "I think that goes deep to the issue of how we raise our boys to be men, goes deeply to values that we tend to hold dear - power, dominance, aggression over empathy, care and collaboration."

"Newsom called for a more in-depth discussion on gender and violence."

I'd never heard this one until now and it's every bit as great as any I've heard. I miss Carlin. I was just getting to know him when he was suddenly gone. Last I saw him was in Jersey Girl. We need more men like him.

I bitch about this missing from conversations every time there is another tragedy and everyone looks at the different factors that contribute to these crimes. Hardly ever is gender brought up. Is it due to everyone already knowing that men commit most of the violent crimes? Is it an automatic assumption and no one thinks we can do anyone about testosterone so why even bother discussing it as something to address in helping to reduce the crimes? Is it because men are still in control of the delivering the message in the media, politics, business, etc?
