(2,717 posts)OK I signed & support the KingThompson bill, with reservations due the wording - I first balked & said 'no way'.
wording, King Thompson: H.R. 1565: Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2013
Summary: To protect Second Amendment rights, ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and provide a responsible and consistent background check process.
No way in current world would I support a '2ndAmendment Rights Protection Act', & that's my reservation. But inclusion of 'Public Safety' gives me some wiggle room, & it actually appears to be closing gunshow loophole, so squinted eyes threw caution to the wind.
bains: Don't let what happened to Toomey-Manchin happen to King-Thompson
Well, two sides to that story, since Toomey Manchin had majority support 56-44 (iirc, with reid's strategy vote added); So let's hope KingThompson gets simple majority support which would immunize it from what happened to MT bgchecks.
popvox: This bill, H.R. 1565, introduced by Congressmen Peter King (R-NY) and Mike Thompson (D-CA) mirrors the bipartisan Manchin/Toomey Senate compromise measure that would require background checks for all gun sales in commercial settings, including at gun shows, on the internet and in classified ads.
Due to loopholes in current law, domestic violence abusers are easily able to obtain firearms through private sales and transfers, even though they should be prohibited from doing so under federal law. Over 6.6 million guns are transferred each year through private transfer not subject to background checks and just the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide for women by 500%. The King/Thompson bill would help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, reduce violence and save womens lives. This legislation already has over 160 co-sponsors, including 3 Republican representatives- but we need more!

(1,954 posts)It was posted in the gungeon beforehand, actually, by another poster; I found it there and in GD before I found it here. I think he linked to the original post here in both cases, to better publicize. From what I saw, there's no opposition from the gunner angle. Wariness, perhaps, but no opposition that I remember.

(597 posts)I support this and also this helps not make criminals out of people traveling to NYC with locked and unloaded and secured guns.
I really like the pre-built prohibited constantly updated persons list. I would also like to see a system implemented that would allow private buyers to complete a secure background check and be issued a certificate/token for clean pass they can provide to seller. This could be totally voluntary but the current system does not allow a private system to run a check at all unless they pay a dealer to do the xfer. I personally wont sell person to person because of this.
