Priest who stayed behind to pray with doomed Titanic passengers could be made a saint

Carri Taylor for Metro.co.uk

The priest who prayed with passengers of the Titanic as it went down could be canonised.

According to survivors from the 1912 disaster Father Thomas Byles twice refused a seat on a lifeboat.

Instead he chose to stay and give mass to passengers who knew they had no chance of rescue.

He died onboard the Titanic along with 1,500 others when it sank off the Atlantic coast on April 15, 1912.
