Pope Francis is springing for a meaningful pilgrimage for Rome's most vulnerable citizens.
The pontiff, who has made helping the poor and downtrodden a hallmark of his papacy, has reportedly footed the bill for two busloads of homeless people to visit the famed Shroud of Turin in advance of his own trip to see the artifact many believe to be Jesus Christ's sacred burial cloth.
According to CBS News, Pope Francis, 78, paid for 42 people who frequent a soup kitchen run by a parish near the Vatican to board a bus on Wednesday bound for Turin. The trip includes an overnight stay in Catholic shelters before a visit to the revered artifact on Thursday.
Don Pablo Castiglia, deputy parish priest of the Santa Lucia parish that runs the soup kitchen, told CBS that Bishop Konrad Krajewski, the pope's almoner, was seen giving each rider some pocket money, calling it a "caress" from Pope Francis.
The group reportedly included not only Catholics, but Orthodox Christians and Muslims as well.
