If this was a random encounter, what did he know about her that he could recommend her?

(15,139 posts)change for two gallons. His car had clearly seen better days and he looked weathered. The man behind him in line assessed the situation, handed a $20.00 bill to the cashier and told her to add it to the other man's tank. The recipient of the kindness could not have been more grateful, and I was reminded of how fortunate I am and what a privilege it is to be in a position to help someone else.

(3,157 posts)Thanks for turning me onto it. That student answer thing is also the reason we were taught in college to be very specific about how we worded questions on tests!

(539 posts)After my wife was just diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer, when we were leaving the doctor's office, she said to our daughter and me "Let's walk over to the Farmer's Market down the street and get some ice cream." On the way there she saw a homeless man sitting on the sidewalk with a sign saying that he was hungry. "If you're here when we return, I'll have a sandwich for you", she told the stranger. On the way out of the market she stopped at a hoagie stand and asked the vendor to make her a sandwich for the man she saw sitting on the curb. "Here, take this one. There's nothing wrong with it. The person who ordered it didn't show up for it. No charge.", he said. She asked me to buy the man a bottle of water and gave him both before we went on to our car for the drive back home.

(12,570 posts)and was never ticketed.
They were always earnest requests on my part. In fact, one of them was because someone backed out of a driveway and demolished the rear-end of my car, then took off. I worked upstairs from the incident (it was just before Christmas) and we heard it. One of my co-workers said, "Oh (C Moon) your car!"
I ran downstairs and found several witnesses had taken the license plate number. It was an older man picking up his wife. He had pressed the gas by mistake and flew in reverse hitting my car. The two cars were suspended in the air, and his wife ran over opened the door and got in. The cars hit the ground and he sped off.
After contacting the police, and tracking the license #, I was reimbursed by their insurance. But you know how that goes: you have a running car, they give you the Bluebook $500 bucks for it, and you can't buy another running car for that.
I was car-less for some time.
Sorry for the long-winded story.
