Hundreds of Thousands of Wrongfully Purged Votes Could Have Cost Dems Midterm Elections

Hundreds of Thousands of Wrongfully Purged Votes Could Have Cost Dems Midterm Elections

Investigative journalist Greg Palast discusses his award winning series "Jim Crow Returns" for Aljazeera America on how hundreds of thousands of mostly low income and people of color were purged from voting rolls in the midterm election - December 16, 14

Hundreds of Thousands of Wrongfully Purged Votes Could Have Cost Dems Midterm ElectionsSHARMINI PERIES, EXEC. PRODUCER, TRNN: Welcome to The Real News Network. I'm Sharmini Peries, coming to you from Baltimore.

Greg Palast won the December Sidney Hillman award for "Jim Crow Returns" and "Challenging Crosscheck", a two-part Al Jazeera America exposé that shows how millions of innocent people who wanted to vote were left out as suspected fraudsters.

On the eave of the 2014 elections, officials began to purge the voters based upon Interstate Crosscheck, a voter fraud prevention software. More than 40,000 voters were dropped from the rolls in Virginia alone.

Now joining us from New York, New York, to discuss all of this is Greg Palast. Greg is investigative reporter for the BBC and The Guardian. He's also a bestselling author.

Thank you so much for joining us, Greg.

up how we vote and make the process open, transparent and cheat proof, the minority who can only gain power by cheating will take advantage of sloppy election procedures.

He is one of only a few actual investigative journalists left.

He broke the End Game Memo, showing the bankers that brought down the world economy. And even with the proof, the bankers go unpunished and even thrive. Like Summers being nominated for the Fed.

If you order his books from his Website they come with Postage Stamps and he writes a Personal Note.

He was down here in the South Gathering Info on the Mid-Term Elections and was involved enough he answered personal Notes from Election Monitors we Dems put in Place for this Election in Key Voting Areas.

He is a very Cool/Good Guy...because he Answers his E-Mails when he's "On the Ground" ...and I can testify to this from personal experience.

He is very involved and REAL...

I won't say more.....

You seem to be creating an argument where none exists. You ask for "regular news", and that's fine but this group specializes in offbeat and off the radar sources.

Democracy Now is increasingly well-known but still "alternative", so included in our listings.

They aren't going to cover every story that every other alternative outlet carries so you'll have to search on your own, maybe even write your own article based on the bits and pieces that went into Palast's story.

Here's an example of some back story:

Hundreds of Fulton voters flagged for questionable addresses

6:19 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 | Filed in: Local News

Both state and Fulton County officials have known for years about scores of voters still registered at now-demolished Atlanta public housing projects, but efforts to fix the problem came too late to clean up the rolls in time for the presidential election.

The county has come up with a plan for protecting against voter fraud, but because of flaws in its database of suspect names and addresses, some residents who never lived in the defunct complexes could be forced to prove where they live, raising concerns that legitimate voters could be dissuaded from casting ballots.

Another worry is that, with turnout at its highest, hundreds of voters could cast ballots in the Nov. 6 election using vacant lots for addresses. At least 40 people with questionable addresses have voted in various Fulton elections since late 2009, when the problem came to light following the mayoral runoff between Mary Norwood and victor Kasim Reed, an analysis by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution found.

Ethel Parks, who appears on Fulton County’s list of voters suspected of being registered at vacant lots, shows her voter registration card at her home in Atlanta on Thursday, October 25, 2012. She has already voted early in the current election. Parks, 77, has lived in her home for the past 13 years.

While the numbers probably aren’t enough to skew any race results, the lingering issue raises more questions about the integrity of Fulton County’s polling process.
