Taschen's "Stanley Kubrick's The Shining" collection released as 2 volume set

In 2023 Taschen released its fourth special limited Stanley Kubrick collection, this one devoted entirely to "The Shining." It was a spectacular box set that included an album of on-set photographs, a meticulous, exhaustively-illustrated second volume about the making of The Shining and miscellaneous sundries, including the screenplay, a compilation of poster and title artwork by the legendary Saul Bass, and a portfolio of production design sketches. But it's $1,500 price tag put it out of the reach of most fans who were interested. (It quickly sold out, although copies are still available from time to time on Ebay and other collectors sites.)

Now, thankfully, Taschen has done what it did with the previous Kubrick limited sets and released it in a more compact, two volume $125 version. Best of all, it appears that what was spectacular in the limited edition has been retained: The breathtaking album of behind-the-scenes photographs, and the 900+ page tome documenting the creation of the film from its earliest inception to the final cut (IMO this is the crown jewel in the collection).

This was a twenty year labor of love by J.W. Rinzler (who sadly did not live to see the release) and director Lee Unkrich. Each set out independently to write his own project, then decided to combine their efforts into a single, more ambitious project.

If $125 is more than you want to spend on this, stay tuned because Taschen often does a third, even more affordable release of these projects--as they did with "The Stanley Kubrick Archives," "Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon," and "The Making of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey," in most cases bringing these single-volume books in at the $25 to $70 range.
