Christopher Plummer, the Canadian-born Shakespearean actor who starred in films including The Sound of Music and Beginners, died on Friday morning at his home in Connecticut. He was 91.
An imposing theatrical presence with a well-cultivated, resonant voice, that critic John Simon once observed, in its chamois mode, can polish mirrors, Plummer was best known for playing Captain von Trapp in the Oscar-winning musical The Sound of Music.
He also won an Oscar in 2012 for his supporting turn in the film Beginners, becoming the oldest actor ever to win the Academy Award for supporting actor.
Plummer had a long and acclaimed career on stage, with two Tony Awards. In films, he was also known for Return of the Pink Panther, The Insider, 12 Monkeys, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and A Beautiful Mind, and he contributed voices for Up, An American Tale and the Madeline TV series.

Plummer's part wasn't big but he made the most of it.

(22,850 posts)We had something similar happen around 40 years ago to a rich great-uncle - except the maid was no sweetheart, and she got away with it.
A common tale, I imagine.

(95 posts)Plummer's part was very big, because he played the part of the nationalistic, jingoistic, patriotic person who was working for the Nazis for a very long time, until he realized what the Nazis stood for, were up to, and what they did. His falling in love with Maria, the new governess helped change him, as well.

(95 posts)I remember Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music. He did an excellent job of playing the role of the patriotic, jingoistic, nationalist Captain Von Trapp who worked for the Nazis, realized what the Nazis were up to and what they stood for, and became a changed and decent person. He really was quite believable in that role.

(22,850 posts)My own favorites have always been his darker roles, I must admit.
One of his least remembered - but no less memorable - roles was as the fictional CIA director Bob Blair in Dreamscape (1983) - a character probably based at least in part on George H.W. Bush.
Plummer was at his sinister best; worth the watch if you haven't already.
