He's Lived 50 Years Off The Grid In Appalachia: Herbal Specialist Joe Hollis, RIP

- YouTube Comments: 'A man living in a remote, grid location for 50 years below the poverty line, is more composed and better spoken than a lot of public figures in 2023.' 'This old man may be off the grid for half a century deep in the mountains, but he is no wildman, he is an intellectual. My respect.'

- Peter Santenello, Aug 19, 2023. Deep in the woods of North Carolina is a man name Joe Hollis who’s lived of the grid for 50 years. Here he’s mastered the techniques of a life tuned to nature, dependent on his natural environment for survival. He also has the largest collection of native Appalachian and Chinese medicinal herbs in the Eastern US.

* Joe Hollis passed away peacefully at age 80 on Nov. 7, 2023 at home with family. Joe's work and spirit live on at Mountain Gardens.

The sanctuary boasts 4 acres of medicinal herbs and edible plants from around the world flourishing in countless niches created by terrain, aspect, water, sun, and shade.

Joe has been acquiring useful plants for the past 4 decades by trading with other botanical gardens, gardeners, and seed-saving/sharing organizations. In his estimation, he grows over one thousand species of plants, including the populations of native medicinals and edibles he has encouraged in the adjoining forests.
Mountain Gardens is the kind of place where one cannot step off the path without trampling on an incredibly rare plant, such as the only Himalayan ginseng growing in North America.

Joe specializes in Asian and western herbs, perennial vegetables, and native woodland medicinals, such as goldenseal, ginseng, false unicorn root, unicorn root, black and blue cohosh, and angelico. He brought jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) into the country from Japan and has helped to educate other growers about its use and cultivation.

The gardens are imbued with Joe’s grace and the loving devotion of those who have tended the plants over the decades. Joe has taught hundreds of students about herbs at Mountain Gardens and thousands through our Online Herbal Immersion...

RIP. I hope that others will take over his operation, and take it forward, in his memory.
