JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- East Tennessee State University's Reece Museum is featuring a photography exhibit on rural Appalachia and a Civil War exhibit that follows the military careers of three Appalachian soldiers.

"Seeing Rural Appalachia" features the photos of Mike Smith, head of the photography program in ETSU's Art and Design Department. Smith has documented the area for more than 30 years, and his work is featured in the collections of major museums throughout the country.

"Caught in the Crossfire: The Journey of Three Appalachian Families through the Civil War" was curated by Patrick Cash, a master's degree candidate in the History Department.

The exhibit includes diaries, letters and artifacts from three soldiers. Cash says the documents make the viewer aware of "how uniquely devastating this war was to the soldiers and their families."
