Just for fun -- The West Virginia Liars Contest & Appalachian Music!
Yep, West Virginia has a Liars Contest every year and here are some past participants and winners:

No, despite rumors to the contrary, Shelley Moore Capito did not win last year's contest.
The videos take a while to download. I'd suggest just letting them run their course the first time and then rerun them for actual viewing.
Here are the rules, should any of you ridge running prevaricators choose to test your skills. After all, most of us have been on DU long enough that this contest should be a cake walk!

This year's contest is part of the annual Vandalia Gathering in Charleston, which takes place May 23-25. From the site: http://www.wvculture.org/vandalia/index.html
The Vandalia Gathering brings together the finest traditional Appalachian musicians for a weekend of great picking. Elder statesmen and young upstarts perform on stage, compete in contests and play in impromptu jam sessions all over the Capitol Complex. Visitors to the Gathering can enjoy fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar contests outside during the day, and concerts in the State Theater in the evenings. Keep your ears open!
Follow the link above for more info on the festivities, which also include many types of traditional dance and folklife activities.
