Appalachian fall music festivals

There's been a summer full of great Appalachian music but the beat doesn't stop with the arrival of fall. Post any information you have on upcoming music events. I'll start with...

from Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Maryland
Traditional Celtic Music Trio Alt to Perform at Mountain City Traditional Arts
Written by FSU Media
Monday, 18 August 2014

The Alt, featuring Grammy-nominated guitarist John Doyle and internationally renowned musicians Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O’Leary, will perform traditional Celtic music at Mountain City Traditional Arts, 25 E. Main St., Frostburg, on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public (donations of $15 are appreciated).

Doyle, born into a family of musicians in Dublin, began performing professionally at age 16 in the group Chanting House. He gained an international reputation when he formed the band Solas and received his first Grammy nomination. After leaving Solas, he was featured on Tim O’Brien’s 2006 Grammy Award-winning album. He has traveled in many duos and trios with legendary artists such as Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll, with whom he received another 2010 Grammy nomination. Recently, he has been recording his own solo music.

Kennedy studied classical piano in Dublin, began performing traditional Scottish and Irish music in Edinburgh and then released two albums with other traditional musicians before moving to the Scottish Highlands in 2007 to further study Gaelic music. There she released her first solo album “New Shoes.” She has since traveled and performed with a variety of artists and earned a master’s degree in music performance and composition from Newcastle University. Her most recent release was “Noble Stranger” in 2012.

O’Leary grew up in Dublin and in the 1990s moved to New York City, where he started playing music with other Irish musicians. He has been involved in teaching traditional music across the country, as well as recording and performing his own work. He released his first album in 2004 with fiddler Patrick Ourceau, and his latest album, “Old Clump,” was released in 2012....

1. Have you been to any in Floyd, VA?

My wife and I planned on seeing one in Floyd while on a trip down Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway, but decided to spend the evening in another town instead.

I have a feeling we probably missed a good time.

We're planning on attending the Virginia Scottish Festival next weekend and although it's not in Appalachia, there's still plenty of great Celtic/Gaelic music all weekend long.

As nice an experience as it was, I regret not going to Floyd instead.

We really, really enjoy your side of the nation. Have done three long road trips through there, and always swore we wanted to move.
The grass is always greener, I suppose...

We've driven the length of it -- just gorgeous, especially in the fall.

5. That was our last trip, two years ago.

Flew back to Dulles, rented a car, and spent the next 14 days on the road.
Drove down Skyline Drive to the BRP, and took the BRP down as far as Linville Falls.

From there we cut across the Carolina's to Savannah, and then back up the coast to Jamestown, then on to Dulles.

Lots of stops along the way for hiking and general exploring.

I've had a love of History since I was a kid, so that side of the country is especially difficult for me to drive through without wanting to stop and look at something about every two miles.

I would certainly count an MFA as qualifying one as educated; one of my sons-in-law has an MFA from UC Riverside, and is a very intelligent young man.

Hosted by Possum Jenkins, Inaugural Carolina Ramble & Reunion Slated for Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 4

A day full of music and cool mountain breezes will fill the autumn air at the inaugural Carolina Ramble & Reunion, hosted by band Possum Jenkins, on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the Watauga County community of Bethel.

The family-friendly event will feature live music from noon to 10 p.m. by Possum Jenkins, Wurlitzer Prize, Soul Benefactor, The Worthless Son-In-Laws, Molly McGinn and more. Passes are $35 and free for kids 12 and younger for the entire day, which includes onsite camping. Pass sales are limited.

“Possum Jenkins has had the pleasure of performing at some of the best music festivals in the region and loves the familial atmosphere shared amongst the performers and the festival attendees,” said event organizer and musician David Brewer. “We want to try and capture a little bit of that magic for our friends, fans and family by hosting our own small event here in the High Country.”

Possum Jenkins formed in Boone during the winter of 2004. Ten years, more than 300 shows and thousands of miles later, the five friends continue to perform their soulful brand of self-described “Carolinacana” to enthusiastic audiences at clubs, festivals, houses and other locales. The band is hosting the Ramble in celebration of its 10th anniversary....

Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music Kicks Off Fall Concert Series, First Season for Director Rodney Sutton
By Emma Speckman
Sept. 30, 2014.

Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music (JSMHM) kicks off its fall concert series with old-time Americana band Strictly Clean and Decent presenting “Remembering Earl and Doc.” The show will honor the late North Carolina legends Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson and feature songs played in their traditional styles—three-finger banjo for Scruggs and flat-pick guitar for Watson. The concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Blowing Rock School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Strictly Clean and Decent acoustic trio features the vocals and a variety of instruments by husband-and-wife team Patrick and Kay Crouch and Ron Shuffler on upright bass. They perform many different musical styles in an acoustic setting.

“The mission statement of Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music is to present the best musicians you’ve never heard of to an appreciative audience,” JSMHM director Rodney Sutton said. ““When he started doing this 20 years ago there was nowhere in Boone to go hear traditional music.”...

...Late this month The Mountain Home Music Bluegrass Boys, Jim Avett and The Stuart Brothers with Alice Gerrard will play in various locations around the High Country. For more information, visit http://www.mountainhomemusic.com/
