"The frigid temperatures and rapid snowfall that slowed the emergency response to an oil train derailment near Mount Carbon on Monday may have helped contain the oil that spilled, according to CSX and state officials.

CSX spokesperson Gary Sease said oil has contaminated the ground around the wreckage and the waters of Armstrong Creek and that the amount of oil that leaked has not yet been determined. But he said much of the oil has been dammed by large chunks of ice at the mouth of Armstrong Creek, preventing much of it from flowing into the Kanawha River."
