This article from Washington Post is linked below without paywall. I am fortunate that my father is in a secure memory care facility. Not everyone is is lucky. This is a heartbreaking.

That said
.in my family..we twice had dementia suffering family members wander away

Got them back safely though

The staff found the secure door wasn’t locking and it became all hands on deck trying to shoo the one lady away from the exit while they got maintenance in to fix it.
