Related: About this forumNow I get what the NBA players motivation is for the new, mid-season tournament...
that's about to start with Tuesday and Thursday night games in November which will also count as regular season games. The tournament is a bit confusing but it ends up with the final eight teams with the best records play the designated games as a single elimination tournament.
The finals will be played in Vegas and EACH PLAYER ON THE WINNING TEAM GETS $500,000 dollars. That's some motivation.
Commissioner Adam Silver pushed for it.

(9,358 posts)I do not think that is motivation for them. As far as I know, benchwarmers in the NBA make $4 million per year. Star players make millions more. $500,000 seems like chump change for NBA players.

(69,854 posts)Guys making $30-50 million per year on a 6 year contract probably don't care much.
But, there are 65 players in the NBA making the Rookie or Veteran Minimum Salary.
That's $900k to $2.8 million. An 18 - 55% bonus would be quite welcome to them
Even some vets that make 5 or 6 million would probably be pleased.
To Steph Curry, who makes $48 million for basketball & another roughly $120 million off-court, a half-million won't motivate much. Like a $100,000 a year employee getting a $300 bonus. Nice, but not meaningful.

(2,886 posts)Average pay is just over 10 million.
Minimum salary is over 1.1 million.
This is the NBA trying to from up interest before football regular season is over.
The bonus, like playoff money is chump change to everyone except the assistant coaches
