Northern Iowa stuns No. 8 Iowa State women's basketball; hands Cyclones first los

CEDAR FALLS –The UNI women’s basketball team was still reeling from learning that star Grace Boffeli would miss the remainder of the season when coach Tanya Warren’s phone went off late Tuesday evening. Senior star Maya McDermott texted Warren with a promise.

“She told me she was going to be ready,” Warren said. “And you trust her because no stage is too big for her and she has proven that over and over and over again.”

McDermott kept her promise Wednesday night, pouring in a game-high 37 points as Northern Iowa knocked off eighth-ranked Iowa State with an 87-75 victory at the McLeod Center. Northern Iowa picked up its first win over a top-10 opponent in program history.

“Being them on our home floor feels really good,” McDermott, a Johnston alum, said. “And my performance, that’s just dedicated to Grace Boffeli. Everything with her and how she went down, everything we do is dedicated to her.”
