Food forests
There are a lot of videos out there about food forests, but I think this one is still the best.

(14,733 posts)(or that have died) has been a fruit tree. And while I admit I've put in some ornamental bushes, I also added a raspberry cane patch and a bush cherry. I want every growing thing to be useful to supporting the wildlife and humans. I'm kind of excited that Seed Savers is starting to sell heritage apple species, although admittedly, the selection is rather slim so far. I've got a spot that would be great for a third apple, but I don't want the bland, generic varieties you can buy in most stores, chosen for attractiveness and shelf life, but rather for flavour.

(14,733 posts)That one dates from Germany in the late 1500s, which appeals to my sense of whimsy, as well as seeming like a bit of a tribute to my father, who was a German teacher for decades, and might not be around much longer. I know he plans to be cremated, and have his ashes 'split up' among his survivors to do with as they see fit. He might like the idea of being 'planted' with an apple tree.
