I was seriously stoned many years ago when I had this epiphany

The lightning flashed, striking the field and setting it ablaze. As smoke filled the air, the apelike creatures were enveloped in the cloud and fled.

Having retreated back to the safety of their caves, they realized they were stoned as all get-out. The lightning had set a field of pot plants on fire and little monkey man was on the way to creating civilization as we know it today.

Putting 2 + 2 together they soon identified the plant that was responsible. The biggest problem was the odds of lightning striking a field of weed was minuscule and therefore someone needed to learn to control fire. And so it came to pass that in order to get high early man came to master fire.

Monkey man soon realized that tossing huge piles of the now sacred plant onto a bonfire was time consuming and wasteful. One clever stoner cleverly figured out that if you took an apple, scooped a small depression into it with a piece of flint and made a tubular hole with a stick connecting the depression to another part of the apple you could put light the weed and suck the smoke through the newly invented apple pipe. Early tool making.

Wandering the planet in search of the sticky icky was a full time job. Once a field was found the task of transporting it back to the cave was an arduous and time consuming task. That was until Oog figured out that a wheel would be the perfect solution. Make a wheel, stick it on a cart, bingo, moving the crop became child's play.

If only they didn't have to travel all the way from A to B just to score, life would be good. Also foraging for food when everyone has the munchies was just harshing everyone's mellow. The solution, plant the seeds and hang out at home instead of spending time out on the road. Small tribes that stayed in one place became the norm and as more caught on to the advantages, the birth of civilization, as it is acknowledged with the advent of agriculture, became a reality.

was due to psilocybin.

How did the human brain triple in size in just two million years?

According to the “Stoned Ape Theory” developed by Terrence McKenna and his brother Dennis McKenna, a community of proto-humans might have consumed the magic mushrooms they found in the wild. That act could have profoundly changed their brains.

“It was like a software to program this neurologically modern hardware,” explained Dennis McKenna in this clip from Fantastic Fungi:

..and the monkey people made him king.

I remember that from '70s Berkeley. I think that's how it went.

All that 32-year-old Albert Hoffman wanted to do in 1938 was synthesize a chemical compound that would stimulate the respiratory and circulatory systems. He had gone to work for Sandoz, a Swiss chemical company, in 1929, after graduation from the University of Zurich. Sandoz, founded in 1886, had started out manufacturing dyes and, later, saccharin. There wasn’t even a formal pharmaceutical department until 1917, when professor Arthur Stoll isolated an active substance called aotamine from ergot, a fungus found in tainted rye that had been used as a folk medicine for generations.

Snip…

Hofmann developed a synthetic process to build the ergot compounds from their component chemicals. Using this method, he recreated ergot’s active ingredients as well as novel but similar compounds that, based on the potency of the ergot compounds, could reasonably be expected to have medical uses.

In a sense Hofmann was playing God, combining lysergic acid with various other organic molecules just to see what happened. He created 24 of these lysergic acid combinations. Then he created the 25th, reacting lysergic acid with diethylamine, a derivative of ammonia. The compound was abbreviated as LSD-25 for the purposes of laboratory testing.

for it - we need them big time these days.

the old empires may have realized they had to outlaw it because it made it very hard to build armies and keep people in line - the smokers and shroom eaters did not buy into the certainty/uncertainty dynamic caused by sowb - did not fear uncertainty or crave certainty - that fed authoritarianism

sex on the wrong brain theory may explain the explosion of fascism, racism, and misogyny as what happens when large segments of the population get isolated at home with their computers, especially males.

When man's desires became more than could be carried in two hands, woman wove a straw basket and civilization was born.
From clay pots to carry water, through planes, trains, and autos to carry people, up to computers to carry information, human desires have always been more than a handful.
