Senate passes marijuana medication bill

BY JOSEPH CHOI - 11/17/22 2:38 PM ET

The Senate passed a bill on Wednesday night that will expand research into the potential medical benefits of marijuana and CBD.

The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act was passed on Wednesday through unanimous consent by a voice vote and will now head to President Biden’s desk to be signed.

The bill, passed by the House in July, establishes a new registration process for researching marijuana and its derivatives. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be directed to register entities who conduct marijuana research and those who supply the marijuana.

The registered entities will be permitted to manufacture, distribute, dispense and possess marijuana or CBD for medical research purposes.

Excellent. We need more research and it will likely lead to legalization JudyM Nov 2022 #11

More studies. 🙄 Cannabis has to be the most studied plant in the universe, and it's still a schedule 1 "narcotic", on par with heroin.

Color me not impressed.

Schedule 1 drugs have no medical use. It's time to take it off the list

Just make the stuff legal. Every state that has legalized did the whole thing or medical at least.

A handful of states (my state of Idaho, for example) still ban marijuana for medical use. I'm curious as to whether the findings of this study might serve as the basis of a nationwide law expanding legal use?

IMO. I’ve done quite a bit of reading about it in medical journals, most of the research being outside the US. The range of medical benefits is vast, extending from cancer to dementia. And the risk profile is also de minimis, from everything I’ve seen, with the exception of youth/young adult use.

This first step will allow it to get into the hands of researchers so much easier, really excellent news.
