House OKs cannabis oil in victory for marijuana advocates (tx)

Marijuana supporters are on the brink of a small victory they say is nonetheless significant in the conservative Texas Legislature.

The Republican-controlled House on Monday approved legalizing trace amounts of a marijuana plant extract for medicinal purposes. The cannabis oil wouldn’t produce the high associated with other parts of marijuana.

Parents of children with intractable epilepsy have pleaded with lawmakers all session, saying the oil helps control seizures.

A doctor would have to provide a prescription if the law is signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.

Since current Texas law doesn’t allow any form of medical marijuana, advocates say this has been their most successful Texas legislative session in history.

The politicians passing these bandaid laws have no plan to legalize anything further. They just don't want to be associated and blamed for the death of a suffering child. It's selfish and disingenuous.

Legalization might happen despite them, but it won't be because of their efforts, and they will hate every bit of it.

Medical marijuana in California happened because of the aids crisis. Over time it spawned a whole industry and freed anyone to take advantage. It might me a small move but over time it's unstoppable.

1996, IIRC - oils weren't even an option back then. Some patients need immediate relief, and there is a danger when dealing with preventative substances being used for relief from symptoms when that relief can take anywhere from an hour to 2 to kick in.

Legislators need to quit pretending to be doctors. This bill is horseshit.
