(a portable one)
I have been mulling this for a while now and I'm going to take the plunge in the next month or so. A little about my weed smoking: I only resumed smoking in the past year after at least 10 years away from it--perhaps more--and I don't smoke a ton of weed. I have friends who can go through 1/8 in a few days to a week; for me, it lasts the better part of a month (typically about 3 weeks); yes I am a lightweight who only takes a few hits and puts down my pipe for an hour or two. I tell you this because I don't really care whether the vape has amazing herb capacity.
I also only smoke "flowers," not oil sor anything else (although I've heard oils are great, so maybe I need to check that out too) and I want to be able to taste all the layers and textures of the weed I'm vaping.
I'm prepared to spend a reasonable sum on the vape, assuming it's really high quality. I have heard that the cheaper vapes aren't really vapes in the strictest sense because they still combust the weed and sometimes have parts that, when heated, can have potentially adverse health risks.
I'd initially thought about a PAX vape and, now that the PAX 2 is out, I could see myself getting that. Other possibilities are the Firefly. The Crafty has great reviews, but it's ~$340 and on principle alone I won't spend more on a vape than I'd spend on an ounce of top shelf weed. And there's a vape coming to the market soon--its release has been pushed back to July--called The Grasshopper. Its designers are engineers who raised money through indiegogo. The reviews of the prototype have been excellent and, best of all, it's a relative bargain at $135.
Do any of you DUers have suggestions? Things I might have overlooked? What do you use?

(46,436 posts)I still roll joints (beautifully, I might add), but this vape thing is interesting to me, as well. I look forward to the responses on this thread.

(46,436 posts)We used to get Jamaican hemp papers but couldn't find a supplier online the last time we looked. I liked them because they made longer joints that lasted four or five days, like King-sized cigarettes. I usually just have a few puffs in the evening before bed for a good night's sleep.

(34,648 posts)I used to smoke blunts, then I grew up and realized it was a waste.

(14,321 posts)all I can think of is how much weed is going up in smoke, unsmoked, while people sit around and chat, blah blah bah. And when I'm spending $50/eighth, I want to minimize waste as much as possible. I feel like vapes are really good at that: heat it, take a drag, and put it down until you wanna hit it again. But also the flavor is SO good with even mediocre vapes and I do love me some flavorful weed.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)if you're spending money. I've been growing my own for a long time, so I'm not quite as conscious of it going "up in smoke."

(3,747 posts)There's often a lot of thc left over in them--I do it with mine, and they make excellent edibles. You can even sprinkle it over salads and as a flavoring--I quite like it. They can be strong, though, so start with little doses. It's much more bioavailable, so it's stronger than you expect.

(53 posts)I buy them here normally at $30/eighth at member's prices.
Tomorrow it'll be $15 eighth for top shelf, and I intend to be the first of the 40 - and they open at 8 tomorrow.
Going to blow $30 on a 1/4!
....
As for vaping experience - I love O.Pen Vape, it's looks like any cigarette pen, very basic setup, and their cartridges are awesome. They carry it in 500, 250, and 150 mg cartridges. Flavors vary, between sativa to indica, with specific strain indicated. My favorite is Green Crack and it's already out for the season.
tishaLA
(14,321 posts)my dispensary sells lots of good sativa 1/8ths for $35, but I figure why not go for the top shelf? I deserve it.

(4,762 posts)A Pax is what you want. It really is that good, everything everyone says, and an utter delight after owning so many shitty ones. They changed the whole game. It's worth every damn cent.

(991 posts)Very stealth and stylish. The original Pax had a problem with the mouthpiece spring getting gummed up with resin. I think they cleared it up with the Pax2.

(3,747 posts)Everything I've seen about it looks fantastic, and what I really liked was the long battery life. Perfect for a portable vape. It's very well built, and will last you quite a while. I was also very impressed by the precise temperature control found in one of their promo videos. The prices is crazy low, too, which is why I'll be getting it when I buy a portable. Biggest problem I've seen with it is that there may be a fair wait.
tishaLA
(14,321 posts)will get theirs in May. But Trevor, one of the founders, said this week, I think, that more wouldn't be ready until July. OTOH, everything I have seen, including the promo videos and vids of people with the prototype, has been amazing. I hate to wait, but at that price? It just might be worth it.

(23,867 posts)Here I just built a brand new bong with special design features. This vape thing is new to me.
I remember around 1975 hearing about a guy who had this smoking device that vaporized bud, and puffed out a ball of smoke. It was an electronic thing that sat on the table. 40 years ahead of his time. It might have been the first vaporizer.
I still like my bong. I guess I'll have to get a vape to know whether the bong is outdated or not.

(6,602 posts)It has the option of being used with the rechargeable built in battery or using an a/c adapter. It comes with 4 oil cans you can fill with ground bud, wax, hash, oil, etc. You will taste the bud, but it can hurt your lungs if you use it a lot. Mostly I use my Natural Goods electric vaporizor, but it's not portable.

All 3 different ones I have bought have been problematic.
The Grasshopper looks good though...

(51,907 posts)I have a Wolf Vaporizer designed for buds (processed with a spice grinder). Would never go back to smoking it. It lasts two nights. The first night I run it up to 408F and then right back down, puffing at 200F and up. The second night I let it stay at 408F for awhile, resulting is a slightly harsher effect, though nowhere near as bad as smoking it. The byproduct is loose brown stuff resembling tobacco. I know people extract that for edibles, and I am looking for some specific recipes.

(14,321 posts)I may get into oils or waxes eventually, but not now. They cost a LOT per gram! I know they last a long time, but I just have sticker shock even when I have no intention of buying any.
And thank you for the hints about how to manage the temps to take advantage of vaping technology. I'll have to come back here and reread it when I've decided on/bought a vape.

(105 posts)I got the 50 watt.. it is really overkill, I should have got the 30 watt. the 50 can really fry the oil. you can adjust the wattage and the voltage then lock the settings. on some there is a twist ring on the vaporizers that have 4 settings to restrict the air flow, use a lower setting or you will suck up oil. if you get one get half dozen heater units.. they are like $1.25, I messed some up, but I got the big hot 50 watt.
I have a botched amputation, no left hand.. lots of nerve pain, and PTSD. works for me. I get my oil from Hemp Health Technologies.

(22,651 posts)I don't think it's necessary or healthy to electronically vaporize the entire plant, those are more for oil or hash.

(528 posts)Pricey but well worth. You'll honestly never get a tastier hit out of anything else. I feel like 1/10th of a gram is good fro 6 or 7 solid hits and 2 or 3 okay ones.

(6,220 posts)I've had about five different vaporizers so far and it's my favorite. I also have a Pax, which is stealthier and more portable because the Solo has a glass stem. The Pax is my second favorite. But I prefer my Solo because the Solo just gives me a better, more consistant vape. It has heat settings, which I find very helpful. It costs about $130, which is cheap compared to the Pax.
tishaLA
(14,321 posts)And loves it. He had a cheap vape and says it's like night and day.
I've decided to to wait until the Grasshopper ships in July. Until then, this pipe I have learned to hate.

(6,220 posts)I love the design! Now I want one.
My husband will kill me if I buy another vaporizer though.
I hope you post back and tell us how you like it.

(26,312 posts)if they are still on schedule for July - and heard back that they indeed are.
I may just bite the bullet. I'd love a Pax, but not at $270.
tishaLA
(14,321 posts)(yes, I settled on that one) has been pushed back until August. I hate waiting....I resent my pipe I smoke out of, but I don't want to spend any money on a different vape to hold me over until the GrassHopper comes. So I'll just suffer #firstworldproblems

(9,666 posts)Bought a Silver Surfer way back when, but it's function was uneven and all it could vape was flower. Now, there are sooooo many products. Kid in a candy store!
Now we have an Innokin iTaste vv 3.0. Can vape flower, concertrates or cartridges. Re-chargeable battery via USB and it can vape while re-charging. Battery light shows how much power you have left. Base unit is only about $30, an accessory kit can run up to $60. It's awesome and so easy to use. Review here.
I see they now have the iTaste vv4, but I'm quite happy with the 3.0. I don't see much in the way of improvement with the v4.
It's a brave new world! Check it out!
