While not new to smoking, I am a newly registered medical patient and i am just learning about edibles. I have been experimenting with different types and strengths and I have one major question...
Why is it that I can eat 1/2 of a 60mg brownie and feel practically nothing while a 20 mg hard candy has me feeling great and still yet a 10 mg cookie has me staring at the walls? This seems backward!
All were the same brand, purchased on the same date, at the same pharmacy, consumed on an empty stomach near the same time of day, all with dramatically different effects! I can understand how the hard candy might be absorbed quicker, but not why that would make a difference in the overall potency. Is it common for an individual to have different tolerances to different products or even to different brands?

(106,206 posts)That is an even bigger problem in the wild west of CBD oil products that are not supposed to contain measurable or at least significant levels of THC. The problem has gotten better in CO and likely WA--who were the earliest states to legalize and thus regulate, but can still be a problem there too.

(106,206 posts)for oversight/regulation. It takes a lot to appropriately regulate. Most of the early medical marijuana states relied on "faith", frankly.

(14,118 posts)but I'd compare it to the difference between a bag of stems and a bag of buds. Enjoy finding out the different effects and dosages!

(14,118 posts)Some people don't experience serious side-effects but other people do. In all cases we have to be aware of our individual tolerances and outcomes!

(2,954 posts)CBD isnt psychoactive, THC is.

(2,954 posts)As someone else posited it is probably testing irregularities. We had a local lab that was inflating THC metrics early on.
Here in Washington all product is labeled with THC and CBD levels, grower, retailer and Lab performing measurements.

(1,642 posts)It is indeed vexing.
We are experimenting at the suggestion of the Dr.
We find that using the 10mg pills is the best way to figure out what's a good oral dose.
We have settled on 3 pills (30mg) as being the right amount. (Figured that out two days ago.)
The pills and "oral syringes" are MJ concentrates expressed in an olive-oil solution.
Perhaps it is the case that the potency of the oil-based product can be most accurately measured, say compared to a cookie.
We find that MMJ is a wonderful replacement for pain killers.

(4,608 posts)and for a long while, that is all I used, then I branched out. The candies themselves, even different brands, are consistent. One today will affect me exactly like it did yesterday, much like your pills. It was only when I tried other forms of edibles that I began to have an issue. I'm on a budget but the dispensaries around me are generous with the coupons and discounts. I tried other edibles to save money and also to root out any issues, like the one I am having, before diving into home production.

(29,517 posts)They may have an explanation and, even if not, it is useful feedback for them to have.
Itd be interesting to know if they do have an explanation, if you feel like checking back in

(4,608 posts)and I do believe their people are knowledgeable, they have been VERY helpful in the past, but they didn't have an answer for me, other than, it affects everyone differently.

(29,517 posts)so you could consider getting in touch with the producer. If the specific ingredients arent listed in the packages its worth asking if they are using different strains because they can hit you differently. Also there could be other ingredients that may play the effects up or down, and that could also vary from person to person. Some products have additional terpenes, for example. Also different cannabinoids can impact how the THC hits you (e.g., CBD mutes the high).
