Anyone else making their own edibles?

I learned a good tip recently. Take a large mason jar, add your butter and put it in a sauce pan with a couple inches of water on low heat. Once melted, add your herbs and screw on the lid. Let sit on very low (I have a warming burner) for a couple hours. Bonus, doesn’t stink up the house

Haven't used that method. Normally I decarb before I make butter, so the butter part doesn't smell up the place.

Sounds like an interesting approach. Usually I make tinctures though. then add that to a recipe. I find it easier to dose it that way.

I’m spoiled in that they’ve been easily available to buy in my state for awhile now

My first batch was not very tasty and weak

How do you make tincture?

You decarb your herb first, then soak it in grain alcohol or at the very least 151 rum. The oils you want are hydrophobic and dissolve well in alcohol or oils.

The tincture can be very strong, like 100 mg/tablespoon strong, so be careful sampling it.

Though there was a run on it when hand sanitizer became scarce. What a waste of good ethanol.

Our corner liquor store (beer is essential) has been a surprisingly good resource. They have milk and I scored a quart of bleach the other day 😊

A company that was selling plant oil tincture reclaim units (you put your tincture in, and it heats it under vacuum then condenses and saves the alcohol, leaving just oil) was also selling gallon and 5 gallon containers of lab grade ethanol (97%).

They could ship it anywhere since it wasn't considered liquor. Funny how laws work sometimes.

Then I spray with Everclear and put it in a crock with butter for about 6 hrs on low. I then strain it through cheesecloth and freeze it till I’m ready to bake. For gummies- I also decarb and then put pot in a jar, cover with Everclear & put in the freezer for 5 days - stirring once a day. Strain thru cheesecloth and it’s ready to use.
