Mayor de Blasio says meeting Bernie Sanders is his first-term highlight

Thursday, December 28, 2017, 6:50 PM

Excerpt:

One of the most fun parts of being mayor of New York City is meeting out-of-town politicians — if you’re Bill de Blasio.

De Blasio was stumped Thursday when asked to name the most fun thing he got to do in his first term as mayor — before eventually landing on a single specific example of getting to meet Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The mayor, who has been criticized by some for not patronizing parks like the High Line or Central Park or working the city’s cultural circuit, didn’t mention any of New York’s great institutions. Instead, de Blasio — who other critics have argued has bigger eyes for national politics than local ones — went on to highlight his emerging bromance with Sanders, who was born in Brooklyn but traded it in for Vermont.

“I've met some extraordinary people along the way, I mentioned having this growing relationship with Bernie Sanders, that’s an amazing thing, that’s been a fascinating and positive thing, but so many other people as well,” he said.
