NBC5: Sen. Bernie Sanders discusses the political landscape, another run for the White House

Excerpt:

BURLINGTON, Vt. —

In a hometown interview that happens less frequently that it once did, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said he will spend a lot of time this year helping Democrats win back control of Congress and has no idea yet if he'll make another run for the presidency.

"The real answer is I've not made the decision," Sanders told NBC5. "And the real answer is the 2018 midterm election, of who controls the House and Senate is of enormous consequence to the future of this country and I'll be as involved in that as i possibly can, but I've honestly not made a decision about 2020."

Sanders barely acknowledged his 2018 Senate re-election campaign, saying the media focuses "too much on horseraces" and laughed when a reporter pointed out there is no race given he still lacks any opponent.

Wth polls showing Sanders still the most popular national politician, and with strong support in Vermont, he can afford to spend much of his time on the road, trying to recruit Democratic candidates and built grassroots support in other states.

Sanders, 76, continues to ride a wave generated by his surprisingly strong run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.
