Sen. Bernie Sanders coming to Chicago to back 'Chuy' Garcia for Congress

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will lend his progressive star power to Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s congressional bid with an appearance next week at a Southwest Side campaign rally.

Garcia, who already enjoys substantial name recognition, is trying to set himself apart from his two remaining opponents for the Democratic nomination to succeed U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez. A speech and photo opportunity by Sanders should help Garcia broaden his appeal, especially among young progressives who make up an important bloc of voters in the Northwest Side part of the district.

The rally will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Apollo’s 2000 theater in Little Village.

Garcia was a national Latino advocate for Sanders during the senator’s 2016 presidential campaign, and Sanders returned the favor by endorsing Garcia shortly after the Cook County commissioner announced his congressional candidacy in November.

“ ‘Chuy’ Garcia is the right person at the right time for the work we have ahead of us,” Sanders said in a news release at the time.
