Sanders is scheduled to speak at a public fundraiser from 1-2 p.m. in the banquet hall at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

Sanders will visit Lubbock after his San Antonio visit on Friday, March 9. News outlets in San Antonio have confirmed this visit as well. San Antonio’s KENS News said Sanders is fundraising for Our Revolution Texas, a “statewide progressive populist organization that formed in the wake of the Bernie Sanders campaign.”

Caraway said Sanders wanted to visit a rural community during his visit to Texas.

“Part of the problem is we’ve left a void on the progressive side in rural America,” said Caraway. “We need to go to rural America with our issues — save Social Security, save Medicare, save Medicaid. So much of this money goes into rural hospitals. We need to be spreading the message into the rural parts of Texas that have been red for the last 20 years.”

Caraway said this region in Texas used to be blue until the 1980′s, and since then Democrats stopped consistently running candidates. Caraway said the atmosphere is different this year, and the party leaders at the national level are taking notice.
