Excerpts:
In my view, there is really no way the middle class in this country is going to grow unless we build the trade union movement. Virtually all of the power rests with employers and large corporations. Workers without unions are finding it very difficult to get the kind of wages and benefits that they need.
The statistics are very clear that workers in union companies are earning better wages and have far better benefits than nonunion workers. And the working people in this country know it. In overwhelming numbers, workers want to join unions.
In terms of younger people, theyre looking at a nation where technology is exploding, where workers productivity has risen, and yet the average young person today has a lower standard of living than his or her parents. Younger people are saying, What is going on? This is the wealthiest country in the history of the worldwhy am I still living at home? Why am I struggling to pay off my student debt 10 years after I graduated college? Why cant I afford healthcare? I think young people are smart enough to look around and say maybe we need unions to get the kinds of wages and benefits that working people are entitled to.
We need a party that has the guts to stand up to the 1% and to represent working families. I think its the right thing to do, and from a public policy point of view, I think it will make this a much better countryto put policies in place that end our high level of poverty, to address the fact that were the only major country not to guarantee healthcare, that were not being as strong as we should on climate change; that we havent made public colleges and universities tuition-free. Those are all ideas that will improve life in the United States of America. Theyre also great political ideas.
