PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - In a significant blow to the Trump administration's Yemen policy, Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced Tuesday night he will support a Senate resolution to yank American support for the Saudi-led war there.
Back in March, Reed and fellow Rhode Islander Sheldon Whitehouse broke with most of their fellow Democrats to vote against a War Powers Resolution co-sponsored by Vermont independent Bernie Sanders that would have limited U.S. involvement in the Middle East conflict. They were among just 10 Democrats who opposed it.
As the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Reed helped give bipartisan backing to the Trump administration's Yemen policy during the debate last spring. Late Tuesday, however, Reed spokesman Chip Unruh said in an email that Reed now supports the resolution.
Sanders has indicated he plans to bring the measure up for another vote as soon as Wednesday, partly due to outrage over Saudi Arabia's reported killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A Utah Republican, Mike Lee, is co-sponsoring it.
