Presidential contender and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders says Boeing Co. is firing workers at its North Charleston campus because they support the International Association of Machinists union, a charge the aerospace giant denies. Sanders, an independent from Vermont, told Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg in a Dec. 14 letter that the aerospace firm should abide by a May 31 election in which North Charleston flight-line workers voted to join the union.
Boeing is challenging the politically charged election and has refused to negotiate with the IAM while its case is being heard by the National Labor Relations Board.
It is alarming that instead of negotiating with the (union), Boeing has instead pursued a campaign of intimidation against the flight readiness technicians, Sanders said in the letter, which also was signed by Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from Ohio.
The senators accuse Boeing of firing six flight-line workers in a recent two-month period because of their pro-union stance.
In our view, it is no coincidence that all of the workers who were recently fired openly support the union ..., they wrote.
