O’Malley makes campaign stop in QCA.

The politically fueled Iowa State Fair just wrapped up Sunday, but there’s no time for presidential candidates to rest. Some are already returning to Iowa and realize the state is a major stop on the road to The White House.

Democrat and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley was in Iowa Sunday. He started his day in Muscatine and ended it in Davenport. Over the last few months O’Malley said he’s slowly gained support, going from one percent in the polls a few months ago, to seven percent now. So far he’s been to 30 of the 99 counties in Iowa, and he said by making Iowa the focus of his campaign, his support will only grow.

Sunday in Davenport, O’Malley spoke about his plans for America. He said as far as education goes, people need to “learn to earn.” If elected president, he said he will make college more affordable. He also mentioned his plans to expand social security instead of cutting it. O’Malley is in favor of raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

“Our economy works when workers earn more money, you can’t have a consumer driven economy where we’re all making the same or less than we were ten or twelve years ago and expect to have economic growth, so we need to get wages going up,” O’Malley said.

Last weekend in Scott County, Democrat Bernie Sanders said he supports the same hike, but O’Malley supporter, Matt Wissing from Davenport said that’s not enough to win his vote.

“I heard Bernie Sanders over at St. Ambrose a couple of months ago, and I like a lot of things he has to say, but the thing I like about Gov. O’Malley best, he’s proven himself, he’s been a mayor, he’s been a governor, he accomplish things, he just doesn’t talk about them, he’s accomplished a lot of things,” Wissing said.

O’Malley said, unlike other candidates, Iowa is the focus of his campaign and he believes this will work to his advantage.

“The people of Iowa make the first decision, and there’s always an inevitable front runner right up until the people of Iowa have their voices heard,” O’Malley said. “Usually in Iowa a new leader emerges, who the people of Iowa put forward to the country to consider, that the rest of the country perhaps have never heard of before, I believe that’s going to happen this time as well.”

Wissing agrees with O’Malley.

“I haven’t made an exact commitment, but I’m looking over everybody, but I’m leaning towards Gov. O’Malley,” Wissing said.
