Martin O'Malley
Related: About this forumFound an 2012 O'Malley article on the AFL-CIO website
It is entitled: "Workers and Their Unions Key to Economic Turnaround, Election Outcome"
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley (D) and Columbia University Professor Dorian Warren both say the best way to solve the nations economic crisis is to grow the middle class rather than allowing wealth to concentrate in fewer and fewer hands. Unions, they say, will play a vital role politically and economically in building a strong middle class.
O'Malley and Warren spoke on a conference call with reporters Friday to counter recent attacks by Republican lawmakers on workers and their unions.
OMalley pointed to Marylands top 10 ranking in job creation, its AAA bond rating and the fact it has the highest median income in the nation to show that economic prosperity is "achieved by a partnership with unions, not by scapegoating labor.

(46,433 posts)2. Thanks, the AFL-CIO lists some other O'Malley successes. Here's one:
From 4/15/2014:
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) signed a bill that protects taxpayers by prohibiting private contractors who have broken the law from obtaining contracts with the state. SB 669 would prevent companies from signing contracts with the state if they have been convicted of a variety of offenses, including tax evasion, conspiracy to defraud the federal government, or willful violation of state prevailing and living wage rates, state wage and hour laws or state occupational safety and health laws.
Maryland's residents just gained important new protection against unscrupulous companies that have a record of denying the rights of working families. Now it's up to other states to follow suit.
This is an important victory that will help protect taxpayers and keep them in control of their services, said Pat Moran, President of AFSCME Maryland.
