in the Pacific theater during the Second World War, and said he witnessed the mushroom cloud rise over Hiroshima while on a routine mission.[5] Thomas later became a Montgomery County-based criminal defense lawyer, and an assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. O'Malley is of Irish, German and Dutch descent.[8][9] He is a descendant of a War of 1812 veteran, and is an active member of the General Society of the War of 1812.

Maryland, like other states, has term limits for governors; he was not permitted to run for a third term.

In Maryland, a governor can only serve two 4 year terms.

Other things, he worked in getting Senator Mikulski elected. While he was in LAw SChool, he worked as her State filed director for her first primary campaign. He was also her director for her general election, which we all know by now, she won!

He worked for her office for two years after that, before deciding to return to Baltimore.

Before all that, he worked for Gary Hart.

Glad to see you here and willing to learn more about him, seabeyond. Click on the links, you will find a lot of good stuff.

I forgot to mention that.

Bottom line is that this family is such an American success story — O'Malley wants to make sure he has the very same opportunities he was given for everyone else.

with him implementing as mayor? or gov? ...

it will be something we will have to touch on, so we understand what that is all about, to be able to address later, i am sure. but i do not know what is true or not, and if it was in animosity or even what it was about.

that is the only bad thing i have heard.

all good from what i have seen.

and i do not have to have perfect. not gonna happen for any of us.

An occasional heckler is hardly not being received well. O'Malley was last Mayor of Baltimore over 8 years ago. He could have stayed away.

I wish more people would develop that realism, sea. All candidates have flaws of some sort; none will have exactly the priorities and stand on issues that we have individually. We compromise where we are comfortable doing so.

I feel comfortable here. GD is impossible these days, and it is not a learning environment. Hillary and Bernie are both good people and good candidates. I am not settled on a candidate, and I want to learn more, especially about O'Malley.

All of it is true.

If he earns the nomination - the Republicans will be snide about it.

Our response - You guys said being a Mayor made one eligible to conduct foreign policy in 2008 - what's changed since then?

His resume is solid.

And not a single one can with the exception of Pataki can touch the Baltimore issue without being called a hypocrite. And then, Pataki has to address why he allowed Guiliani to get away with ten kinds of murder in NYC.

I'm looking beyond the primary at this point. The three who declared have to "lose" for me to not uplift the candidates strengths.

Reducing crime in Baltimore was a huge challenge. O'Malley's administration used "zero tolerance" to get drug dealers off street corners and away from people's front yards. Baltimore was successful in reducing violent crime and brought down the murder rate. These methods made some people angry, and many were falsely arrested. But Baltimore was a very special case, and citizens feared for their lives. Baltimore was a hard nut to crack, and O'Malley did his best to make the city safer. He couldn't work miracles. Poverty was rampant in many areas of the city. Industry was moving to China and Korea. Black and Decker, a major tool manufacturer and a landmark for jobs in Baltimore, was outsourced to the Far East. There were hundreds of companies that abandoned Baltimore. O'Malley did his best with what he had. Sometimes the methods were harsh, but the streets were safer for African American families. He also had a system set up for communities to respond to what was being done, and he monitored police activity. I don't think even those who criticized his methods would like to go back to the pre-O'Malley days in Baltimore. Many neighborhoods were dangerous places to live. They still are, to this day; but what happens now is on the present mayor's watch, not O'Malley's. And the problem of police brutality, as we see it all over the country, was not "caused" by O'Malley. The same issues of police training -- in particular the militarization of police -- are a problem in many of our major cities. O'Malley's experience with what worked and what did not work is an important contribution to the present debate in this country. When he was reelected mayor, O'Malley received over 80% of the vote in Baltimore City. I look forward to his candid remarks on this and many issues.

There is some confusion about a TV show called "The Wire," where the lead character is often mistaken for O'Malley. David Simon did use O'Malley, but he also used other political figures to create the character of Tommy Carcetti. Oftentimes, TV watchers (and TV programmers) fall into the trap of confusing fact with fiction. I would not recommend watching the series to learn more about the real O'Malley. David Simon overdid (dramatized) more than a few things in his depiction of Baltimore, and O'Malley was not pleased with that. O'Malley did and still does love Baltimore, despite its problems.
