As we remember the fallen on this Memorial Day, please let us also think of the living.

As it happens, Martin O'Malley declared his candidacy for President of the United States exactly one year ago today. Three months ago, he suspended his campaign. The very first story he mentioned on that night was the story of the mother of an American soldier who asked him to mention this at the next debate.

"My son is an American soldier, and he is my son. He is not a pair of boots on the ground."

Martin had many other good things to say that night, such as this:

"I believe the toughness of the fight is the way the hidden God has of telling us that we're actually fighting for something worth saving."
